Children's Eye Care

Kids don't always know what they're not seeing.

Children rarely complain about blurry vision. They assume everyone sees the way they do. That’s why early eye exams matter — not just to hand out glasses, but to make sure the visual system is developing the way it should. We start seeing patients at age 5. We’re patient, specific, and good with kids who’d rather be anywhere else.

School screenings aren’t eye exams.
A basic school screening tells you one thing: whether a child can see the board. It misses most of what actually matters. Our pediatric exams check visual acuity, eye tracking, focusing flexibility, and how the eyes work together as a team. We look for amblyopia, strabismus, convergence insufficiency, and other binocular vision issues that affect how kids read, learn, and move through the world.

Kids don’t complain about these things. They just struggle — often quietly, often for years. We look for all of it, every visit.

Childhood myopia

A stronger prescription every year isn't inevitable.

Childhood myopia is increasing at a rate that wasn’t true a generation ago. A child who’s myopic at eight is often significantly more myopic by eighteen — and high myopia carries real long-term risks beyond thicker glasses, including increased lifetime risk of glaucoma, cataracts, and retinal tears.

The good news: we can do something about it.

What is myopia management?

Instead of just updating a prescription year after year and watching it climb, myopia management uses targeted treatments to slow the progression of nearsightedness during the years the eye is still growing. It’s one of the things we do that most practices don’t — and we’ve seen it make a real difference.

Your child might be a good fit if they were diagnosed with myopia before age 10, if their prescription is shifting more than 0.50 diopters per year, if there’s a family history of high myopia, or if they’re spending a lot of time on screens and near work. When in doubt, come talk to us.

How we do it:

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Overnight lenses that gently reshape the cornea while your child sleeps, so they wake up seeing clearly without glasses or contacts. Great for active kids who don't want to think about their vision during the day, and backed by strong clinical evidence for slowing progression.

Multifocal soft contact lenses

Daily wear lenses with a specialized design that corrects vision while reducing the peripheral signal that drives myopia progression. Comfortable, flexible, and a good fit for kids who are ready for contacts.

Myopia control spectacle lenses

Newer lens designs that slow axial elongation while looking and wearing just like regular glasses. A natural starting point for younger kids or those not quite ready for contacts.

Low-dose atropine drops

A once-daily drop with solid clinical backing. Works well on its own or alongside other treatments, especially for younger children.

We’ll talk through what makes the most sense for your child — their age, their prescription, how fast things are changing, and what actually fits their life. There’s no formula. Just a real conversation and a plan that works for them.
kids' eyewear

Frames they'll
actually want to wear.

We carry what we think is the best kids’ eyewear collection in Austin — frames for every age, face, and personality. Ultra-durable options from Nano for kids who are hard on everything. Very French Gangsters for the kid who already has strong opinions about what looks good. And frames sized for our youngest patients too. Because a kid who likes their glasses is a kid who actually wears them.
We welcome families from across Austin and Central Texas, including East Austin, Mueller, Westlake, Round Rock, Pflugerville, Buda, and Kyle.

The eye exam your little one deserves. Gentle, unhurried, and built around them — not a rush through the alphabet.
