Specialty Contact Lenses

When standard lenses aren't enough.

Some eyes need more than a standard prescription can offer. Corneas that are irregular, scarred, or structurally complex don’t play by the same rules — and the lenses that work for most people simply can’t do what these eyes need.

This is one of our favorite things to do. And we’re good at it.

Keratoconus and corneal conditions

If you have keratoconus or another corneal condition, you may have been told that clear vision is just going to be harder for you. That’s not always true. Traditional lenses can’t mask the structural irregularities of an irregular cornea — but a well-fitted scleral lens can. Scleral lenses vault completely over the cornea and rest on the white of the eye, creating a smooth liquid optical surface that corrects what glasses and soft lenses can’t. For many of our patients, the improvement in clarity and daily comfort is genuinely life-changing.

We fit specialty lenses for keratoconus, pellucid marginal degeneration, keratoglobus, post-LASIK ectasia, post-RK ectasia, corneal scarring, corneal transplant patients including post-PKP, DSAEK, and DMEK, and Fuchs’ dystrophy. For patients whose keratoconus is still progressing, we work closely with ophthalmologists who perform corneal crosslinking — making sure you get the right intervention at the right time, not just a better lens.

If you’ve been told your cornea is too irregular for regular contacts, we’d like to take another look.

How we do it

More precise. More custom. Fewer visits.

Most specialty lens fittings are a process of trial and error — try a lens, come back, adjust, repeat. We do it differently.

We use the Eaglet Eye Surface Profiler, one of the most advanced corneal mapping tools available, to capture a detailed high-resolution scan of the entire surface of your eye before we design a single lens. That data drives the fit. The result is a more precise lens from the start, a faster fitting process, and fewer visits to get where you need to be.

It’s the difference between a lens that’s close and a lens that’s actually built for your eye.

The full range of specialty lenses:

Scleral lenses

Large-diameter rigid lenses that vault completely over the cornea and rest on the sclera. The space between the lens and the cornea fills with saline, creating a smooth liquid optical surface that corrects irregular corneas and provides exceptional comfort. The first choice for keratoconus, post-surgical corneal irregularity, and severe dry eye.

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Lenses worn overnight that gently reshape the cornea while you sleep. Remove them in the morning and see clearly all day, without glasses or contacts. Effective for myopia management and for adults who want contact lens freedom without surgery.

Rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses

Smaller rigid lenses with sharper optics than soft lenses and excellent longevity. The right choice for high prescriptions and irregular astigmatism when scleral lenses aren't indicated.

Hybrid lenses

A rigid center for crisp optics combined with a soft skirt for comfort. For patients who want the visual quality of a rigid lens without the adaptation period.

Custom soft contact lenses

For patients who need more than a standard soft lens can offer but aren't ready for a rigid option. Custom soft lenses are manufactured to precise specifications — diameter, base curve, prescription — for eyes that fall outside what off-the-shelf lenses can accommodate. A good fit for irregular prescriptions, high astigmatism, and patients who've struggled to find a comfortable soft lens.

Specialty multifocal contact lenses

For presbyopic patients with complex needs.
